Finnish people have been going to movies this year! Most viewers in 30 years, it’s definitely good news. Around 8 million viewers makes it more than the actual population (~5 million). Skyfall, not surprisingly, is in the lead for the moment but I would think that the Hobbit will go past before the end of the year.
Here is a list of the films with most views Ilta-Sanomat (In Finnish). Of course the list doesn’t really include anything to boast about, but it’s somewhat nice to see Puhdistus (Purge) quite high on the list.
Here’s the original news from Filmikamari (The Finnish Chamber of Films) ->In Finnish again
Interestingly, Finnish film critics did raise Teuvo Tulio’s peculiar film Sensuela (1973) to the top 10 of greatest Finnish films in a recent poll by the Finnish broadcasting company YLE. It ranked 9, leaving behind classics like Calamari Union (Aki Kaurismäki, 1985), Earth is a Sinful Song (Rauni Mollberg, 1973) and the remake of The Unknown Soldier (Rauni Mollberg, 1985) at shared 10th place.
The film is hard to describe, gripping quality of its schlock is something to be experienced to be believed. I was surprised of the result, but glad too.
